1) Do firefighters support annexation? Professional Firefighters of Kokomo, Local 396 will be proud to provide services in proposed areas as long as citizen safety and firefighter safety is the top priority.
2) How many hours does a firefighter work a day?
Firefighters work 24 hour shifts which involve time for training and emergency runs.
3) How many firefighters work per day?
Currently there are 29 firefighters per day manning KFD equipment. If KFD fully complied with the NFPA there would be 40 per day.
4) Why do fire trucks respond with ambulances?
Fire trucks are strategically placed throughout the city to be first on the scene no matter what the emergency.
5) Why are fire trucks at car wrecks?
Fire trucks are there to provide emergency medical care, extricate patients who are unable to get out of the vehicle, and to stop fluids from getting into our sewers.
6) What else do firefighters do besides fight fire?
First and foremost we provide fire safety to children throughout the county, provide emergency medical care, rope, trench , confined space, water and ice rescue, as well as building collapse and any other emergency that might come up.
7) How many vacation days to firefighters receive?
Like most places, vacations are seniority based. 6 months - 1 year of service = 1 day of vacation 1 year - 5 years = 6 days of vacation 6 years - 10 years = 9 days of vacation 11 years - 15 years = 12 days of vacation 16 years and up = 15 days of vacation
8) How many fire trucks respond to a fire or fire alarm?
6 pieces of KFD equipment are dispatched on most fires. Battalion Chief, Ambulance, Squad, and 3 engines. The number of trucks varies depending on the type of fire, but 6 is common for a house fire to ensure citizen and firefighter safety.
9) How many firefighters does it take to put out a fire safely?
That number always changes because no fire is ever the same.
10) What is NFPA?
National Fire Protection Agency is the government agency the provides policy and standards for firefighter safety, much like OSHA would be for your place of work.
11) How many runs does KFD make per year?
Firefighters respond to over 8000 runs per year including Emergency Medical Care, fire runs, and special rescues.
12) Does the city provide food to firefighters while on duty?
No, firefighters either bring their own food or take up daily collections to buy food for the day.
13) Who cooks meals?
We all take turns planning a menu, cooking, and cleaning up.
14) Does KFD have any female firefighters?
Yes, we currently have 4 females firefighters.
15) Do you have a fire dog?
Although we don’t have a station dog like a Dalmatian, we do have an arson dog, Tyson, that assists in investigating fires throughout the county.
16) How long are you a “rookie” firefighter?
The probationary period is one year.
17) Is KFD hiring?
